Therapy is a journey, and in order for your therapist to better guide you with your concerns or challenges, try to be as transparent as you can, once you feel safe and comfortable with your therapist.
Therapy is not advice-giving, it is a collaborative process, where we find what best works for the client with regards to the concern and how we can manage it effectively using certain tools and effective strategies.
Humour is a way of relieving stress for certain clients and I understand for some clients it is a lot easier to convey certain situations or express certain thoughts or emotions using humour, hence as a therapist, I would be curious about the context of the situation where humour is being used.
I do convey to my clients that at any point they feel the sessions are getting overwhelming for the client, we can always take a break, if there are any queries about anything they are all always free to interrupt me and ask me. I always do check-ins periodically to understand how my client is feeling within the session.
I would take my time to understand more about my clients and try to understand how I can help a client feel more at ease so they feel less hesitant to open up. Everybody has their own pace and I respect that.
I take my “Me Time”. I invest time into activities I thoroughly find joy in, like reading, cooking, and doodling and 6 days a week I workout at the gym, which has honestly helped me get my Endorphins (happy hormones) up and running for the day.
A book that I personally found helpful was The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi. It is a philosophical guide to strategy, drawing parallels between martial arts and various aspects of life.
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
